Daler Rowney White Gesso Primer : Graduate : 1000 ml
The white gesso also called primer (applied before paints) is distinguishable by its strong adhesion and is ideal for direct application to all semi-absorbent surfaces before work with acrylic and oil paints.
Suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. It dries quickly when dry a white matt surface with a slight roughness is achieved, the surface can be sanded for detailed work. It can be given colour with acrylic paints before applying.
The primer can be used by itself like white paint, especially suited for dark surfaces like MDF.
Is it imperative I apply primer before working on wood with oil paints?
Oil paints have two main ingredients – oil (linseed, sunflower) and pigment.
The oil brings the pigment particles together and acts as a binder. If oil paints are applied to an unprimed/untreated surface, the oil will get absorbed into the wood leaving the dry pigment on top, which usually has the consistency of chalk and can be removed with a simple touch.
Applying primer ensures the consistency of the paint remains.
Is it essential I prime canvas before working with oil/ acrylic paints on it?
Most stretched canvases on the market are primer with a universal primer suitable for oil, gouache, acrylic and watercolour paints. If the canvas is white it has already been primed. When an additional layer of primer is added a much smoother surface is achieved – since the new layer fills all the roughness of the first layer making the canvas suitable for detailed work.
Is it possible to use acrylic paints on untreated wood?
Yes, acrylic paints get absorbed into most wood surfaces (solid wood or plywood). For some of the lighter colours (most commonly yellow), the colour of the wood may still be visible making a secondary colour (something along the lines of pale brown).
When using lighter azure colours applying a primer will make them appear stronger.
