What does "permanent marker" mean?
We’re used to associating the term “permanent marker” with the highly absorbent markers with a strong odor that are commonly found in office supply stores. They have transparent ink, are usually available in a limited range of black, red, blue, and green, dry quickly both on the intended surface and if left uncapped, and gradually fade in sunlight.
However, there are also much better and more versatile permanent markers with ink or paint based on various substances, which adhere permanently to a much wider variety of surfaces and are more difficult to erase.
In general , the concept of a permanent marker is relative, since in almost all cases a mark can be partially or completely removed mechanically (by scraping) or by using the right solvent (alcohol, thinner, etc.).
Which marker is durable enough for our purpose depends on the work surface, the application conditions, and the characteristics we want it to have (such as color intensity, lightfastness, etc.).
Universal permanent markers (felt-tip type)
These are the most basic and well-known type of non-air-pressurized markers , which use ink and have a felt tip. They resemble felt-tip pens with a round or beveled tip and are generally not refillable (with a few exceptions).
Our all-purpose permanent markers of this type are primarily filled with pigment-based ink, which makes them fade-resistant.
Liquid-ink markers
Liquid-ink markers are definitely a perennial favorite because of the optimal combination of opacity, vibrancy, versatility, and durability they offer. Their versatility gives us the peace of mind that they’ll get the job done no matter what we use them on. That way, we can focus on writing and drawing, rather than worrying about protecting the marker.
They feature a pump mechanism with a ball that breaks up the ink. When pressure is applied, the tip retracts into the marker body and fills with the flowing ink.
Permanent markers
Streaker markers , as they are also known, are solid-color sticks similar to oil pastels.
Sakura has patented its Solid Marker as early as 1978. It’s a great tool for those working in industrial settings, as it adheres to just about anything. This includes dirty, oily, rusty, and even submerged surfaces. The ink in the markers is oil-based and dries in a few minutes, after which it is indelible except with solvents.
Specialized Markers
The last and most specialized group we will mention consists of markers designed for specific surfaces and weather conditions. In our product line, these include:
