Choosing between oil-based and acrylic markers is a classic dilemma, but oil-based markers have a few superpowers. While acrylic markers are great for canvas and paper, oil-based markers win when it comes to durability.

1. Excellent adhesion to smooth surfaces
Acrylic markers are water-based and can easily peel or scratch off smooth, non-porous surfaces. Oil-based markers literally bond to glass, metal, plastic, ceramics, stone and rubber. Once dry, they are extremely hard to remove.
2. Maximum weather resistance
For projects that will stay outdoors (such as signs, garden decorations or lettering on car tyres), oil-based markers are the right choice. Their mark is fully waterproof, does not wash off in the rain and is highly UV-resistant, which keeps the colours from fading in the sun.
3. Smooth coverage without overlap marks
With acrylic markers you can often see lines and streaks where the nib has passed twice. Oil-based ink dries slightly more slowly, which lets the pigment level itself on the surface. The result is a dense, even colour.
4. Blending
Because they do not dry instantly, the colours of oil-based markers can be blended into each other on the surface. You can also use a brush with a little thinner (such as turpentine or white spirit) to create soft gradients – something that is almost impossible with fast-drying acrylics.
5. Rich, glossy finish
Most oil-based markers dry to a gloss or satin sheen that gives the project a varnished look. Acrylic markers usually dry matte.

Important note: Oil-based markers need good ventilation while you work and are not well suited to thin paper, as the oil will soak through to the other side.
