In this project, Vili shows us how the same macramé knot can be used to make various everyday accessories.

The Technique and Knots

The weave combines two classic elements:

  • Starting knot (“Lark’s Head”): The three cotton cords are folded in half and secured to the metal ring, forming six working strands.

  • “Josephine” knot: The main raised pattern is formed by symmetrically interweaving the strands into one another. When tightened, they form dense and beautiful segments resembling small braids.

Applications

The model can be adapted as:

  • Bag or pencil case strap: In the photo, Vili has paired it with a dark green velvet cylindrical pencil case to wear over the shoulder.

  • Key ring: A shorter version of the same knit design with a metal ring serves as a key holder.

  • Dog Leash: The braid is sturdy, thick, and comfortable to grip, making it suitable for use as a pet leash as well.

  • Camera or bottle strap: By adding carabiners to both ends, the braid can be attached to various items.

Workflow

To make the process easier and more organized, Vili uses a wooden board with a metal clamp. The clamp holds the metal ring securely in place while the cords are being woven. This helps maintain even tension on the threads so that the pattern remains symmetrical from start to finish.
