The first thing the moldable bread dough is its pliability. It resembles chewing gum or taffy and can be easily kneaded and shaped in various ways, softening from the warmth of your hands.
Differences Between Hard Rubber and Bread Rubber
The hard erasers we’re all familiar with rub away the black marks on the paper, leaving behind tiny particles. Soft erasers, on the other hand, are designed to lift or “peel away” the fine particles of graphite or charcoal that we perceive as color. This is achieved not by vigorous rubbing, but rather by pressing, tapping, or gently gliding across the page.
The soft eraser is used to partially remove color, make fine adjustments, and add details, as well as to blend and achieve a soft appearance and halftones, while the hard eraser is used for complete removal, making rough corrections, and refining basic outlines.
You could say that erasers of this type fall somewhere between erasing tools—like a regular eraser—and drawing tools—like a pencil. They work well with graphite and colored pencils, charcoal, chalk, and dry pastels.
The eraser leaves no dust on the paper—it absorbs charcoal or graphite. To clean it, simply tuck the soiled part inward and knead the eraser. After prolonged use, this can be done by stretching, folding, and repeating, similar to the way candy is made. 🍭🍬
Generally, a soft tire lasts a relatively long time. When it no longer cleans itself by being squeezed, becomes sticky, or gets very hard, it’s time to replace it.
And why is it called "bread" tire?
Some languages, such as Bulgarian, French, and Italian, still hint at the history of these rubber bands, namely that Before the last third of the 18th century, a moist, crumbled bread mixture was used for the same purpose.
It is believed that rubber began to be used as an eraser in 1770, when the English scientist Edward Nairn accidentally erased a pencil with a piece of rubber instead of bread. 🙂
Nowadays, bread tires are made primarily from unvulcanized synthetic rubber and come in a wide variety of colors.
