The family of white markers and fine-tip pens offers something for every specific need. Here, we’ll take a look at the different types.

Line width

White writing instruments are manufactured in all kinds of variations with different line widths —from a line as thin as a thread gel pens to the line of the widest Posca marker, which can rival a small spatula in terms of how it applies color. Typically, the fine-tip versions have a hard plastic or metal tip, while the wide-tip versions have a porous synthetic-fiber nib . They are a very convenient alternative to drawing and writing with white ink and a pen.

Brush markers fall somewhere in the middle , as they can produce both thin and thick lines depending on the angle and pressure applied. The flexible, cone-shaped tip is suitable for calligraphy and handwriting, as well as for more expressive drawing that seeks spontaneity in the line. The flexibility of the brush varies among different brands and manufacturers.

Saturation

Most brands of white markers aim for a completely opaque, snow-white mark that stands out against all colors. However, there are also less saturated varieties that resemble chalk. These are suitable for creating more delicate effects, softening, and lightening small areas to prepare them for other colors. We can also achieve transparency by quickly blending the applied lines with a brush and water before they dry.

Usage Ideas

White markers and pens can transform both line drawings and colored illustrations created with any medium, making them more vivid. They are ideal for rendering highlights or creating a wet-on-wet effect. The precision of fine-tip markers and gel pens makes them a useful tool in graphic art, where this is otherwise much more difficult to achieve with an eraser. Acrylic markers provide a great deal of control when adding outlines and contrast to already dried acrylic paintings.

Thanks to its formula, white ink applies smoothly even over watercolor and gouache paintings. However, since it contains water, it is good to be careful not to dilute the colors when repeating the lines.

You can use it to write and draw on all kinds of darker surfaces to create eye-catching cards, gift tags, personalized packaging, illustrations, and paintings on colored and blackpaper or canvas.

The same applies to hand-made stamps on fabric. Thanks to the precision they offer, white markers are indispensable for drawing fine lines along the threads of various fabrics. To set the colors, iron them through parchment paper, just like fabric paints.

Markers with minimal smudging Sakura Permapaque are designed for permanent marking of objects. Sakura also offers wide markers in the form of a round stick with oil-based, hardened ink oil-based ink, designed to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations, write even on wet or dirty surfaces, and protect metals from oxidation.

Other Practical Applications

  • Marking on glass, ceramic, metal, and other non-absorbent surfaces and objects. Once dry, acrylic markers and gel pens are resistant to water and wiping, but they peel off when pressure is applied. This is useful, for example, for permanent but temporary inscriptions on store windowsthat are intended to be erased, or for festive decorations. For a bit more durability, you can use a varnish marker (which is oil-based), and applying a clear coat will significantly strengthen them;
  • correcting mistakes in drawings, similar to a correction pen;
  • nail art —it becomes completely durable once sealed with a top coat.

Tip: White writing instruments work best when used with a moderate hand motion. This is especially true for gel pens, which use a rotating ball to disperse their thick ink.
