It is recommended to use it sparingly and to add no more than 5% retarder to the paint so that it can dry completely afterward. Too much retarder will give the paint a “rubbery” consistency, rendering it unusable.

The role of Amsterdam’s acrylic paint retarder is to slow down the evaporation of water from the acrylic, giving the artist more time to blend, blend and transition colors, work wet-on-wet, and build fine details.
The retarder for the otherwise fast-drying acrylic paint extends the time during which the paint remains “workable” before it begins to set, form a polymer film, and become touch-dry.
The retarder preserves the opacity and brightness of the color and can extend the drying time by up to 20%, after which it completely evaporates from the paint layer.
It can be thinned with a little water when it starts to dry on the palette.
