Talens’ concentrated fixative spray offers a practical way to protect artwork created with dry pastels, pencils, charcoal, sanguine, and chalk, preventing it from smudging or yellowing over time.
This aerosol varnish, based on ethanol and colorless resin , improves the adhesion of the various layers of dry pigment and prevents them from flaking off, leaving the painting with a completely matte finish.
It is recommended to apply it lightly and sparingly between each layer for optimal adhesion, as well as to prevent the different layers of color from blending, since the paper often becomes oversaturated with pigment. The fixing spray darkens the colors if too much is sprayed.
For best results, shake the spray can well before spraying from a distance of about 40 cm, holding it perpendicular to the picture, which should be hanging vertically.
Another, more delicate technique is to spray over the horizontally placed sheet, parallel to the drawing, so that it is covered with a very thin layer of fixative.
It dries in about 10–15 minutes.
The final finish is a matter of preference—unvarnished, dry pastels, for example, retain their original velvety appearance and the vibrancy of their colors, especially the lighter shades.
