A large black-and-purple block of high-quality pressed charcoal, offering a variety of options for dry and wet drawing and the quick creation of expressive sketches on large formats, in Mars Violet.
Dervent’s XL cubes, measuring 2 x 2 x 6 cm, are a highly interactive medium and ideal for drawing with bold strokes, creating textures directly on the paper, and smudging with your fingers, a pencil or an eraser.
When wet , the block turns into a watercolor stick— the naturally water-soluble pigment easily saturates the wet brush with color, drying to a grainy finish.
Wet painting has the advantage that the pigment particles adhere slightly better to the paper. However, to ensure better protection against smudging, you can always use a spray fixative.
Mars Violet stands out against various shades of paper and other charcoal and chalk colors without fading over time.
It complements perfectly with Derwent’s Tinted Charcoal colored pencils , which can be used to add precise details.
The XL blocks are fine and fragile, but their size makes them more difficult to break.
Here they are in action .
