A large, deep-black block of high-quality pressed charcoal offering a wide range of possibilities for dry and wet drawing and for quickly creating expressive sketches on large formats.
Dervent’s XL cubes, measuring 2 x 2 x 6 cm, are a highly interactive medium and ideal for drawing with bold strokes, creating textures directly on the paper, and smudging with your fingers, a pencil or an eraser.
When wet , the block turns into a watercolor stick— the naturally water-soluble pigment easily saturates the wet brush with color, drying to a grainy finish.
Wet painting has the advantage that the pigment particles adhere slightly better to the paper. However, to ensure better protection against smudging, you can always use a spray fixative.
The black is exceptionally dense and rich, with a high degree of lightfastness.
It complements perfectly with Derwent’s Tinted Charcoal series of colored charcoal pencils , perfect for precise details.
The XL blocks are fine and fragile, but their size makes them more difficult to break.
Here they are in action .
