A double wooden frame with a fine mesh for straining paper pulp at home and making A4 sheets.
Straining is one of the key steps in handmade paper production.
How to Make Paper at Home
- The process begins by soaking and dissolving the cellulose sheets in a sufficiently deep container of water, from which they can be scooped up with a strainer (transparent storage containers work well for this purpose).
- After they have completely dissolved, stir the cloudy water until it is homogeneous. The sieve is turned over so that the mesh is facing up (the large frame remains on top), and then it is submerged in the water.
- By tilting the machine sideways and forward, the scooped pulp is leveled until a uniform layer is achieved.
- The outer frame, which has been sized to fit the sheet, is lifted. The felt is placed on top of the pulp, after which the small frame is turned over and pressed down gently so that the resulting sheet remains on the fabric to drain.
- You can place another piece of felt on top of the sheet and, in this position, press and dry it as much as possible. Afterward, the sheet can be removed and hung up or set aside to finish drying.
- Before it dries completely, it is pressed again. Finally, it is smoothed out with an iron.
It’s also a fun way to recycle old paper that would otherwise be thrown away or to create handmade sheets with interesting colors and textures.
