Key differences from traditional dry charcoal:
- They don’t leave a powdery residue and don’t crumble: The oil-based formula keeps the pigment on the paper. They’re cleaner to work with, and the drawing doesn’t smudge easily when touched by hand.
- Smooth and effortless application: They glide easily across the paper and produce a deep, rich, velvety black color even without applying much pressure.
- No need for a fixative: Since the oil or wax binds the charcoal to the paper, the finished sketch is more durable over time.
- Harder to erase: They aren’t as easy to erase with a regular eraser or a bread eraser as charcoal is. That’s why they’re often used in the later stages of drawing to add final dark accents.
