Designed to increase the flow and transparency of paints, it improves the durability of the applied coat of paint, enhances the gloss, imparting a yellowish tint, and significantly extends the drying time, which can be useful when working on a piece for a long time and with great attention to detail.
Venetian turpentine is a traditional medium used to impart transparency to oil paints in painting techniques where the image is built up on the canvas by applying thin, semi-transparent layers of paint, allowing the color of the previous layer to blend optically with the color of the layer above it to achieve a sense of depth and luminosity in the image.
In English, this technique is referred to as “glazing,” while in Bulgarian, the term “velatura” is commonly used.
To achieve this effect, transparent oil paint (usually indicated by an empty square on the tube (□)) is mixed with a glazing medium and applied with a soft brush in a thin layer over the dried previous coat of paint.
When mixed with paint, the medium causes brushstrokes to “blend together,” making them imperceptible. It can be thinned with white spirit or turpentine as needed. Let’s light it.
