Talens’ Dark Harlem Drying Agent is an additive designed to speed up the drying of oil paints.
Oil medium enhances the brilliance and transparency of colors —properties that are useful for wet-on-wet and velature techniques.
Since it reduces the elasticity and durability of the paint layer, it should be used sparingly, at a concentration of no more than 5–10%.
Because of its darker color, it’s best to use it with other dark colors. Mixing it with light colors can alter the shades.
It can be diluted with white spirit.
***
Harlem is oilier than other siccatives and is therefore not suitable for the lower layers of multi-layered paintings—in accordance with the basic principle of oil painting: “oil over dry.”
In general, siccatives are used in minimal quantities, as they accelerate not only the drying process but also the aging of the paintings.
