Talens No. 003, a 400-ml spray bottle of matte-finish protective varnish, protects paintings from aging and dust.
The manufacturer recommends applying varnish at least one year after the painting is completed, to allow the oil paints to absorb oxygen from the air and dry completely. In this way, the molecules form chains, with ultraviolet light providing the energy for the process. The chemical drying of linseed oil, which is the binder in oil paints, takes much longer than the physical drying of other types of paint. Depending on the thickness of the layer and the type of pigment, the paints dry to the touch in approximately one to six weeks. The layers of paint dry through to the core over a period of 6 to 12 months, and the drying of very thick layers of paint can take several years.
Even after they have dried, oil paints continue to absorb oxygen from the air, which causes them to age. Therefore, once the paints are completely dry, it is recommended to apply a protective varnish to reduce oxygen absorption and slow down the aging process. The varnish also protects the paint from dust, which can not only settle on the paint but also penetrate it.
The varnish on the protected paintings can be removed over time, along with the dust, without damaging the layers of paint beneath it.
Ingredients: synthetic resin, white spirit, silicon dioxide. It dries in a few hours without yellowing, and the dried varnish can be removed with white spirit or turpentine.
We’re really into it.
