Van Gogh’s Silver No. 800.5 can add a delicate pearlescent sheen to oil pastel drawings, thanks to the fine aluminum powder in its composition. This metallic pastel is made from high-quality pigment, mineral oils, and wax, pressed into a soft , round stick measuring 7 cm x 1.1 cm and wrapped in a protective paper sleeve.
Pastel produces a dense, smooth stroke without lumps, with minimal flaking, and can be used on slightly textured paper and cardboard, fine canvas, or other primed surfaces.
The shade is relatively light and stands out particularly well on medium-dark to dark backgrounds. Its sheen is also visible against a light background, depending on the angle of the light and the direction in which it is applied, which can create interesting effects.
The Van Gogh line consists of 60 colors (including 3 additional pearlescent shades), many of which have the same single-pigment composition as more professional series and brands, but at a much more affordable price.
Oil pastels are an exciting medium that can be used with a variety of techniques: beyond layering, blending, and smudging with a finger, a paper pencil, or even a palette knife, they can be scraped away (sgraffito) or dissolved with (just a tiny bit of!) white spirit or linseed oil.
Once completed, the paintings can be protected by placing them behind glass or sealing them with liquid varnish.
