Van Gogh’s Gold No. 803.5 adds a pearlescent sheen to oil pastel drawings, thanks to the fine aluminum powder in its formulation. This metallic pastel is made from high-quality pigments, mineral oils, and wax, pressed into a soft , round stick measuring 7 cm x 1.1 cm and wrapped in a protective paper sleeve.
Pastel is characterized by a dense, smooth stroke without lumps, with minimal flaking, and can be used on slightly textured paper and cardboard, fine canvas, or other primed surfaces.
This shade stands out particularly well on medium-dark to dark backgrounds. The sheen of the dark gold is also visible against a light background, depending on the angle of the light and the direction in which the pastel is blended, allowing for interesting effects.
The Van Gogh line consists of 60 colors (including 3 additional pearlescent shades), many of which have the same single-pigment composition as more professional series and brands, but at a much more affordable price.
Oil pastels are an exciting medium that can be used with a variety of techniques: beyond layering, blending, and smudging with a finger, a paper pencil, or even a palette knife, they can be scraped away (sgraffito) or dissolved with (just a tiny bit of!) white spirit or linseed oil.
Once completed, the paintings can be protected by placing them behind glass or sealing them with liquid varnish.
