Features and Benefits:
- A natural wood finish —a classic material that protects the surface and highlights the wood’s natural grain.
- Deep luster and transparency —forms a thin, hard, and smooth layer without clouding.
- Lightfastness —retains its clarity and does not yellow from sun exposure over time.
Application:
- French polish (pad technique) —achieving a mirror-like shine on solid wood and musical instruments by applying several thin layers.
- Protection for gilding – a final coat over gesso, metal leaf, and bronze powder that protects the metal from tarnishing and oxidation.
- Icon painting and restoration – a separating layer between the individual stages of painting or as a final protective coating.
Preparation and Procedure:
- Dissolution —mix the flakes with pure alcohol (over 95%) in a glass container.
- Shaking and Straining – Seal the container tightly and shake periodically until the resin is completely dissolved. Before use, strain the liquid through a fine filter or cheesecloth.
- Application – Apply in thin layers using a soft brush or cotton swab.
- Storage —Store the prepared varnish in a tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dry place.
